Food and Mood

I am sure you have heard of the saying ‘you are what you eat’. The message behind this is well known and refers to your health as a result of the foods that you consume. 

However what is less well known is the effect of food on your mood.
Different types of food can affect the way you both think and feel. Indeed it does not have to be substances you ingest that affect you mental health, but also smells such as perfumes and fragrances in the environment that can affect how you.
Dr Doris Rapp is a leader in the field of allergies and allergy research and has found many different types of substances can affect a person’s physical as well as mental health.
Many people are aware of E numbers and how they may affect a person’s behaviour however some people may be affected by strawberries, bananas or even shampoo. The resultant affects maybe a change in someone’s mood. They may become more tired, irritable or even sad.
If you think you may have an allergy or food intolerance as a result of changes in your behaviour, I would recommend speaking to your GP and asking about having an allergy test.
A way forward is to keep a food diary, writing down all the foods you eat and how you feel a short while afterwards. Carrying this out over a period of a month may help you try to identify changes in your mood following certain substances. Following this you may choose to cut certain foods or other products out and see if you notice any differences.
